★ Quick answer

Pre-built fiber from the FiOS deployment era — fully symmetric, no data caps, no contracts. Where it's available, it's the gold standard cable replacement. Mature, reliable, the network just works.

🟢 RECOMMENDED When available, take it.

Ownership & corporate history

Ownership type: publicly-traded (since 2005)

Previously known as / acquired: Bell Atlantic · NYNEX · GTE Internetworking · Verizon FiOS (original branding)

Fios was rolled out 2005-2010 under Verizon Communications. Verizon split off its wireless operations as an internal segment but kept everything under one corporate parent. The retail STORES are split into separate brands (Verizon — wireless, Verizon Fios — home internet/TV) — that's where the customer confusion starts.

Returning your equipment

Accepted return methods: ups-store-prepaid-label · corporate-fios-store

You must return: Fios router/gateway, ONT power supply (some models), Set-top boxes (if you had Fios TV), Remote controls (if applicable)

⚠ Do NOT drop equipment at these stores

These branded retail stores share the carrier's name but cannot accept equipment returns for this service. Confirm before driving:

  • Verizon Wireless retail stores (the ones with the red checkmark logo selling phones)
  • Verizon Authorized Retailers (TCC, GoWireless, Cellular Sales, etc. — these are FRANCHISES, not Verizon-operated)

Common mistake: The single most common Fios mistake: driving Fios equipment to a Verizon Wireless store and being turned away. Wireless retail and Fios are operationally separate. Fios equipment goes back via UPS with a prepaid label (preferred) OR a small number of dedicated corporate Fios stores in the original Fios footprint.

Where you can actually go in person

Confirmed company-operated stores that can sign up service AND accept equipment returns. Authorized-retailer addresses are tagged separately because they cannot always handle returns.
